Brittany Howard Sings Sly & The Family Stone With Tedeschi Trucks Band In Grand Rapids

Alabama Shakes' Brittany Howard joined Tedeschi Trucks Band onstage Tuesday night at Acrisure Amphitheater in Grand Rapids for a soulful rendition of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Everyday People.” The appearance marked the first collaboration between the two bands during Alabama Shakes’ four-show run opening for TTB on the Future Soul Tour.

Tuesday’s concert at Acrisure Amphitheater was the third of the four dates on which Alabama Shakes are serving as the opening act for Tedeschi Trucks Band. Howard came out during the 12-piece ensemble’s medley of “You Can Make It If You Try”/“Everyday People.” Alabama Shakes touring members Shanay Johnson and Karita Law provided backing vocals throughout the Sly & The Family Stone sequence, while Howard teamed with Susan Tedeschi to sing “Everyday People.”

Tedeschi Trucks Band first debuted the pairing of “You Can Make It If You Try” and “Everyday People” during their 2026 residency at New York City’s Beacon Theatre. The band premiered the medley on March 11, with both songs making their TTB debuts that night.

The Sly & The Family Stone favorites have remained part of TTB’s repertoire throughout the band’s Future Soul Tour. The pairing joins a frequently played medley of Stand! cuts “Sing A Simple Song” and “I Want To Take You Higher” in the group’s rotation.

The Grand Rapids collaboration came during a show that featured a particularly cover-heavy set from Tedeschi Trucks Band. The band opened with “Hear My Dear” and “Playing With My Emotions” before working through covers of Ann Cole’s “Got My Mo-Jo Working (But It Just Won’t Work On You),” Chuck Willis’ “I Feel So Bad” and Derek & The Dominos’ “Keep On Growing.”

After “Take Me As I Am,” TTB moved into the Sly & The Family Stone medley with Alabama Shakes. The band subsequently delivered “Made Up Mind,” “Midnight In Harlem” and a cover of The Allman Brothers Band’s “Stand Back” before closing by linking “I Want More” with Santana’s “Soul Sacrifice.”

Alabama Shakes end its time on the road with Tedeschi Trucks Band tonight, August 26, at Cincinnati’s Riverbend Music Center. Lukas Nelson resumes support duties for TTB from August 28 through September 2.
