Road warrior Bob Weir brought his Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack ensemble to the North Charleston Performing Arts Center last night to launch the outfit’s six-week winter tour. The show included Wolf Bros’ debut performance of the Beatles’ “Come Together,” a song Weir hadn’t played publicly in over six years.
Weir, bassist Don Was, drummer Jay Lane, keyboardist Jeff Chimenti, pedal steel guitarist Barry Sless, trombonist Adam Theis, trumpeter Brian Switzer and saxophonist Sheldon Brown began the concert and tour with a “The Music Never Stopped” that included side trips through “Easy Answers” and “Standing On Shakey Ground.” Bobby then swapped his electric guitar with an acoustic for a pairing of “Me & My Uncle” and “Friend Of The Devil.” The guitarist returned to electric for “She Says” from his RatDog days.

Technical difficulties hampered the start of the show, so the band took a break after “She Says” to sort out the issues. Then, violinist Mads Tolling starred on “Ramble On Rose” before the full ensemble including cellist Alex Kelly covered “Come Together.” Bobby Weir last performed the Abbey Road classic way back on January 20, 2017 during a set hosted by D’Angelico Guitars at the NAMM convention. “Come Together” flowed into a set-closing “New Speedway Boogie.”
A four-piece Wolf Bros lineup featuring Weir, Was, Lane and Chimenti took the stage to get Thursday’s second set underway with a cover of Little Feat’s “Easy To Slip.” The full ensemble came back for the ensuing “Greatest Story Ever Told.” Bobby Weir and Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack rolled through more Grateful Dead live staples in seamless fashion over the remainder of the frame. “Playing In The Band” bled into “Truckin’,” which gave way to “Estimated Prophet” ahead of “The Wheel” and “Wharf Rat.” The horns and strings were showcased on the latter ahead of move into “Terrapin Station.” The collective worked through each section of the “Terrapin Station Suite” as featured on the Grateful Dead’s 1977 studio album of the same name.
Bobby Weir & Wolf Bros featuring The Wolfpack said farewell last night with a “Liberty” encore. The tour moves to Jacksonville, Florida tonight. An official live audio stream can be heard via nugs.net.
