Zane Kesey Planning Furthur Bus 50th Anniversary Trip

On June 17, 1964 Ken Kesey and his band of Merry Pranksters embarked upon a trip across the country that arguably kicked off the psychedelic era in a multi-colored school bus dubbed “Furthur.” With the 50th anniversary of the infamous trip, which was immortalized in both song (The Who’s “Magic Bus”) and in literature (Tom Wolfe’s The Electric Kool-Aid Acid Test), Kesey’s son Zane and friends are aiming to restore Ken’s 1947 bus (not the same one used in 1964) for another “grand trek.”

Zane Kesey and Derek Stevens recently launched a Kickstarter campaign with the goal of raising $27,500 to fund the excursion. The pair are less than $3,000 away from the goal with five days remaining. Kesey aims to document the trip and has said that those who donate at least $200 will be considered as “extras.” While Kesey hasn’t revealed the itinerary for the trip, he told Vice they’ll head to the Lockn’ and Phases Of The Moon festivals.

While we don’t begrudge Zane from trying to round up funds to finance his trip, it doesn’t seem very ’60s like to make people donate in order to be considered for a spot on the bus. We hope once the goal is reached, Kesey and the other organizers will search out true characters rather than just those who could afford to throw in $200 or more.
