Yonder Mountain String Band delivered a two-night home state stand at Cervantes Masterpiece Ballroom in Denver this past weekend. Saturday’s show saw the bluegrass group paying their respects to Grateful Dead guitarist Bob Weir just hours after the Grateful Dead Guitarist Bob Weir Has Diednews of his passing.
YMSB opened the concert with the traditional “Little Maggie.” Five songs into the set, Yonder brought up opener and banjo player Kyle Tuttle and mandolinist Dominick Leslie to join them for their Bob Weir tribute and more.
The collaboration began with a Grateful Dead staple song that Bobby did not write, but certainly made his own, “Me And My Uncle,” led by YMSB guitarist Adam Aijala. Yonder’s banjo player Dave Johnston then helmed Bill Browning’s “Dark Hollow,” another staple cover for the Dead in their early days captained by Weir. Bassist Ben Kaufmann also shared words on the impact Bobby and the Grateful Dead had on music.
Check out a clip of “Me And My Uncle” along with Ben’s tribute to Bob Weir below:
Tuttle and Leslie stuck around for renditions of “Traffic Jam” and “Boatman.” Yonder also went it alone for a rendering of the Grateful Dead’s “Shakedown Street” ahead of set closer, the trad “Raleigh and Spencer.” YMSB returned to encore with “Idaho” and bluegrass standard “Don’t Let Your Deal Go Down.”
