The long-standing friendship between Primus bassist Les Claypool and Ween guitarist Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo paid musicial dividends once again on Sunday night at the North Coast Music Festival in Chicago. Claypool, who was on hand with Primus for a festival performance on Sunday, sat-in with Ween on “The Mollusk.”
Claypool’s sit-in came just over a month after Deaner sat-in with Primus in Asbury Park. This is the second year in a row the pair have exchanged guest spots as in 2016 Deaner joined The Claypool Lennon Delirium in Philadelphia while Les aided The Dean Ween Group in Ohio.
Earlier in the set, Ween opened with “Exactly Where I’m At” followed by “Flutes Of The Chi.” The five-piece then embarked on an extended “Take Me Away” complete with a tease of The Doors’ “L.A. Woman.” Rarities “Seconds,” “I Play It Off Legit,” “Sweet Texas Fire” and “Boy’s Club” made Ween’s setlist in Chicago along with plenty of favorites including “Big Jilm,” “Buckingham Green,” “Roses Are Free” and “Transdermal Celebration.”
Les’s sit-in on “The Mollusk” came ten songs into the set. Claypool also found time to jam with Deaner and Primus guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde backstage. Ween encored with “Mister Would You Please Help My Pony” followed by “You Fucked Up.” The band returns to the road later this month for three shows in California.
