Waxahatchee (singer-songwriter Katie Crutchfield) and MJ Lenderman have frequently shared live stage and recording studio time together in recent years and brought that chemistry on a joint tour that launched last night at Atlanta’s Symphony Hall. The pair’s opening night setlist was constructed of their originals, a song from their Snocaps project and a few choice covers.
MJ Lenderman contributed extensively to Crutchfield’s 2024 Waxahatchee album, Tigers Blood, which was produced by Brad Cook. Lenderman, Cook, Crutchfield and Crutchfield’s twin sister Allison Crutchfield later formed the group Snocaps, who embarked on a short tour in support of their self-titled debut album after it was released late last year.
Lenderman and Crutchfield were joined on the Symphony Hall stage by Crutchfield’s frequent cohorts, Cole Berggren and Colin Croom, playing multiple instruments throughout the show.
Alternating between MJ Lenderman songs and Waxahatchee songs, the former relied heavily on his 2024 album, Manning Fireworks, while the latter pulled largely from Tigers Blood. The pair also incorporated the Snocaps song, “Angel Wings,” into the set.
The lineup of covers played on opening night included “Wrecking Ball” by Gillian Welch in the main set and encore takes on “Choosin’ Texas” by Ella Langley, “Abandoned” by Lucinda Williams, “All the Right Reasons” by The Jayhawks and “Six O’Clock News” by Kathleen Edwards. Singer-songwriter Brennan Wedl, who is supporting the tour, came back for the last three songs of the night.
Waxahatchee and Wedl recently shared a studio recording of “Six O’Clock News.” Today, This Is Lorelei shared Waxahatchee’s version of “Where’s Your Love Now” from the forthcoming Box for Buddy, Box for Star deluxe edition.
