As reported My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James was among Alone & Together‘s special guests at a special Friday night aftershow benefit at Jane Pickens Theater after the day’s action at the Newport Folk Festival last month. One of the songs James added to was a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Candyman” and near-complete video of the performance has finally surfaced.
Alone & Together features Kevin Morby, Sam Cohen, Eric D. Johnson, Joe Russo and Josh Kaufman. Cohen, who was using Jerry Garcia’s famed Wolf guitar, began singing lead on “Candyman” before James emerged to sing a few verses. Though Jim James had recorded a studio version of “Candyman” for 2016’s Day Of The Dead, the version in Newport is thought to be the first time he sang the tune in public. My Morning Jacket’s Carl Broemel also contributed to the Dead cover.
The show also featured a cover of Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” that saw Alone & Together joined by a bevy of guests including James, Broemel and MMJ drummer Patrick Hallahan as well as Nicole Atkins and others. Most of the evening’s guests and more also contributed to a rendition of “Give Peace A Chance” by John Lennon, while James was among those who added to a cover of Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology).”
