Alone & Together were the house band at a special Friday night aftershow benefit at Jane Pickens Theater after the day’s action at the Newport Folk Festival. The supergroup features Kevin Morby, Sam Cohen, Eric D. Johnson, Joe Russo and Josh Kaufman. Alone & Together loaded the stage with special guests throughout the night including three members of My Morning Jacket. Cohen used Jerry Garcia’s iconic Wolf guitar for portions of the concert.

Jim James sat-in with the group on covers of Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology)” and “Candyman” by the Grateful Dead. The My Morning Jacket frontman recorded “Candyman” for the 2016 tribute album Day Of The Dead and had never performed the song live before Friday night. Sam Cohen used Wolf on “Candyman” and more marking the first time Jerry Garcia’s guitar had been used in public since it was sold to Brian Halligan at Brooklyn Bowl in New York City on May 31. The show also featured a cover of Bob Dylan’s “You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere” that saw Alone & Together joined by a bevy of guests including Jim James, MMJ drummer Patrick Hallahan and guitarist Carl Broemel as well as Nicole Atkins and others. Most of the evening’s guests and more also contributed to a rendition of “Give Peace A Chance” by John Lennon.
