Watch Jim James Cover ‘America’ & Guest With Bob Weir, Phil Lesh & Friends

As reported My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James was the penultimate performer at the Sound Summit music festival in Marin County, California on Saturday. James played a guest-filled set and then sat-in with headliners Bob Weir With Phil Lesh & Friends for an interesting sequence. More high-quality video footage of Jim James in action at Sound Summit has surfaced.

Jim James played a rare solo set at Sound Summit and fit in a healthy dose of covers among originals from MMJ and beyond. While Jim ended his set with three songs featuring Weir, Bobby wasn’t James’ only guest. Eric Johnson of Fruit Bats fame sat-in with Jim James on three songs. One of those tunes was a gorgeous rendition of “America” by Simon & Garfunkel. James handled Paul Simon’s parts, while Johnson tackled the harmonies and verse originally sung by Art Garfunkel. Saturday was just the second documented performance of “America” by Jim James.

As noted Jim James emerged during Bob Weir With Phil Lesh & Friends’ set for a “Tennessee Jed” featuring the New Basement Tapes’ tune “Down On The Bottom” within the Grateful Dead classic.
