Jim James Guests With Bob Weir And Phil Lesh & Friends At Sound Summit

The 2017 Sound Summit was held Saturday at the Mountain Theater in Marin County’s Mount Tamalpais State Park. Phil Lesh & Friends featuring Bob Weir and a solo set from Jim James ended Sound Summit ’17 and the two headlining acts collaborated with each other.

One day after Jim James teamed up with Bob Weir at Sweetwater, the Grateful Dead and My Morning Jacket guitarists shared the stage again. Weir emerged at the end of James’ set for Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker,” a song the pair played the previous evening, as well the Grateful Dead gem “Brokedown Palace” and Buffalo Springfield’s “For What It’s Worth.” Earlier in the set, the MMJ frontman opened with “Rainbow Connection” from The Muppets and welcomed Eric Johnson for “Wild Honey,” Simon & Garfunkel’s “America” and “Wonderful” as part of a 16-song performance.

The lineup for Saturday’s Phil Lesh & Friends set saw Weir and Lesh joined by pianist Holly Bowling, guitarist Ross James and drummer Alex Koford. Yet the performance started with just Bob on acoustic and Phil on bass for a verse and jam on “Dark Star.” The rest of the band filled in before the second verse ahead of a move towards “Playing In The Band.”

After “Viola Lee Blues” and “Mexicali Blues” Jim James came out for “Tennesse Jed.” Jim, Phil, Bobby, Ross, Holly and Alex worked “Tennessee Jed” into “Down On The Bottom” from James’ New Basement Tapes project featuring lyrics by Bob Dylan. The ensemble worked “Down On The Bottom” back into “Tennessee Jed” before Jim James left the stage. Phil then sang “Box Of Rain” ahead of a set-closing sequence of “Jack Straw,” “Bird Song,” “Not Fade Away” and “One More Saturday Night.”
