Jim James Welcomes Bob Weir At Sweetwater Music Hall

Just a few weeks after guesting with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at Lockn’, My Morning Jacket frontman Jim James teamed up with Bob Weir at the Grateful Dead guitarist’s Sweetwater Music Hall venue in Mill Valley, California on Friday night. James was on hand to open for Preservation Hall Jazz Band and Bobby came out for a five-song sequence to help Jim end his set.

Jim James opened with “Losin’ Your Head” from his Monsters Of Folk days and then dusted off “Look At You” from 2008’s MMJ album, Evil Urges. “The Right Place,” another Monsters Of Folk song, was followed by “Hopefully” off My Morning Jacket’s At Dawn LP and a cover of Johnnie Frierson’s “Have You Been Good to Yourself.” Jim debuted a song titled “Yes To Everything” at Newport and fit it into his Sweetwater set ahead of a cover of Brian Wilson’s “Love & Mercy.”

Up next was a string of beloved MMJ classics – “The Way That He Sings,” “Golden” and “I Will Be There When You Die” before Jim played his own “Here In Spirit” and a rendition of “The Beautiful Ones” by Prince. Weir then emerged for Marvin Gaye’s “Mercy Mercy Me (The Ecology).” The Jim James/Bob Weir duo proceeded on with a cover of Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker,” a song Bobby played for the first time just over a year ago at The Greek in Berkeley with Dave Matthews Band.

Weir and James then treated the capacity crowd to a pair of Grateful Dead gems, “Brown Eyed Women” and “Candyman.” Jim had performed both with Joe Russo’s Almost Dead at Lockn’ and recorded “Candyman” for the Day Of The Dead tribute LP. For the finale, Bobby and Jim said farewell with a beautiful version of Bob Dylan’s “Blowin’ In The Wind.”

Jim James plays a solo set and Weir teams with Phil Lesh & The Terrapin Family Band at Sound Summit upon Mount Tamalpais later today.
