Umphrey’s McGee stopped by The Anthem In Washington D.C. on Friday. UM dusted off their “Sad Clint Eastwood” mashup for the first time nearly eight years to the day they last played it in 2014 to close out the second set.
Umphrey’s kicked off the show with the instrumental “Roctopus” before a pairing of “Intentions Clear” and “Kula.” Another coupling of “1348” and “Words” followed. “Spires” then proceeded “Cemetary Walk” and “Cemetary Walk II” to close out the first set.

The second set got underway with “The Triple Wide” leading into “Remind Me.” The fourth rendition of the new single “I Don’t Know What I Want” followed ahead of the classic “Divisions.” “The Silent Type” counted as the penultimate song of the second set before the band unshelved “Sad Clint Eastwood” following in the footsteps of a “Come As Your Kids” mashup bust out a few weeks back in Detroit.
Umphrey’s McGee debuted “Sad Clint Eastwood” — a mix of Metallica’s “Sad But True” and Gorillaz’ “Clint Eastwood” — on Halloween 2008 at The Warfield In San Francisco, as per All Things Umphreys, and later included it on their 2016 mashup record Zonkey. The 2022 Anthem version marked the seventh time the band has played “Sad Clint Eastwood” live since 2008 and the first time the song saw action since February 20, 2014 for a total gap of 659 shows. Drummer Kris Myers helmed the Metallica tune while bassist Ryan Stasik delivered the “Clint Eastwood” chorus. The mashup brought the second set to a close. UM returned to encore with “Den” before “Gulf Stream” led into a return to “1348.”
