Umphrey’s McGee made their Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia debut last night. The sextet dusted off covers of Iron Maiden’s “The Trooper” and Wang Chung’s “Dance Hall Days” during Wednesday’s concert.
The show began with the instrumental “There’s No Crying In Mexico.” Next came the familiar pairing of “Miss Tinkle’s Orchestra” and “Mulche’s Odyssey.” Umphrey’s then tore through “Nopener” before working the beloved “Hajimemashite” into their first “Tribute To The Spinal Shaft” since last August. “Tribute” gave way to “Out Of Order” which bled into “Water” ahead of a set-closing “August.”

An exploratory and unfinished “1348” kicked off last night’s second set. Umphrey’s jammed “1348” into Wang Chung’s 1984 hit “Dance Hall Days.” Guitarist Brendan Bayliss handled lead vocals on the cover last played way back on March 21, 2015. Wednesday marked UM’s fifth performance of the tune. The band vamped on the groove with Jake Cinninger providing fretboard fireworks before the six-piece launched into “Prowler.” Another oldie followed in “2nd Self” and then the group delivered a run of “Hurt Bird Bath,” “I Don’t Know What I Want” and “2×2” to bring the set to a close.
UM had another treat in store to start their encore as they covered “The Trooper” for the first time since November 7, 2014. The band then ended their Brooklyn Bowl Philadelphia debut by closing out the “1348” they left unfinished earlier in the night.
College Street Music Hall in New Haven, Connecticut hosts UM tonight. Watch pro-shot and fan-shot video footage from last night, including both bust outs, below:
