Umphrey’s McGee was joined by moe. bassist Rob Derhak and Béla Fleck and the Flecktones percussionist Roy “Futureman” Wooten for guest spots as part of their headlining sets at this past weekend’s Summer Camp Music Festival in Chillicothe, Illinois. Derhak sat-in on “Booth Love” during UM’s second set on Saturday, while Futureman added to “Slacker” on Sunday.
The sextet played a total of five sets on Summer Camp’s Sunshine Stage over the weekend. Umphrey’s McGee stuck to originals and welcomed back Jake Cinninger after the guitarist sat out the band's Atlanta performances late last month.
Umphrey’s bookended their two sets on Friday with “All In Time.” The opener spanned 16 minutes and set the tone for a weekend heavy on jamming. “Crucial Taunt” emerged out of the “All In Time” jam and gave way to “I Don’t Know What I Want,” the band’s first single of 2022 and lone song from their forthcoming studio album, Asking For A Friend played live thus far. Next came an adventurous “Remind Me” with a groovy improvisation and a “Higgins” that led into a set-closing “Hurt Bird Bath” featuring two distinct jam sections.
The beloved instrumental “The Triple Wide” kicked off Friday’s second set and was connected to “Mantis” via the song’s “Preamble.” Friday’s “Mantis” was the longest song of the weekend filled with dynamic jamming that altered between bliss and evil-tinged themes. From there, keyboardist Joel Cummins led the group through “Phil’s Farm” before an expansive “Bridgeless,” which bled into the end of “All In Time” to end the frame.
UM started their first set on Saturday with “The Floor.” The rest of Saturday’s opening stanza was based around “Nothing Too Fancy” with “August,” “Wappy Sprayberry,” “Mulche’s Odyssey” and “Suxity” all played within. “The Silent Type” got the second set underway on Saturday and led into a “Miss Tinkle’s Overture” featuring a funky jam and spot-on “Wife Soup.” A pairing of “Dump City” and “Attachments” came next before Rob Derhak lent a hand on “Booth Love.” Umphrey’s McGee then delivered a dream encore of “Resolution” and “Glory.”
In traditional fashion, Umphrey’s McGee closed out their weekend with an afternoon set on Sunday. Oldies “2nd Self” and “Push The Pig” opened along with a “Bad Friday” dance party and the bluesy “Women Wine And Song.” The latter paved the way for “The Linear,” which dropped into “Walletsworth.” Futureman then came out for a percussion-fueled “Slacker” before a well-jammed “It Doesn’t Matter” led into the reggae-tinged “FF.” Umphrey’s McGee went on to end their final Summer Camp 2022 set with “Day Nurse.”
