Umphrey’s McGee & Kanika Moore Cover Led Zeppelin At Peach Music Festival
UM welcomed Moore to debut a Zeppelin classic.
Umphrey’s McGee delivered a set at The Peach Music Festival on Montage Mountain in Scranton, Pennsylvania, which went down just after midnight on July 3. UM welcomed Doom Flamingo vocalist Kanika Moore to debut a Led Zeppelin cover.
Umphrey’s McGee — guitarists Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger, drummer Kris Myers, bassist Ryan Stasik, keyboardist Joel Cummins and percussionist Andy Farag — kicked things off with the instrumental “Leave Me In Las Vegas. The track is set to land on the band’s forthcoming album, You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall & Left A Raging Bull.
The ominous instrumental certainly added to the late-night vibe before UM then headed into rocker “The Silent Type.” Bayliss led the way through the song before the band dropped into a groove which they built up into a nice transition back into the final lyrics. UM then offered up the classic “Plunger.” After cycling through the riffy composed sections the band locked into another groove which gave way into a “drums” section featuring Myers and Farag. “They’re our engine,” Cinninger remarked. The band then got into the newer tune “Looks.”
“Hurt Bird Bath” came next and included elements of John Coltrane’s “Love Supreme.” “The Floor” and “Speak Up” followed with the latter containing a “Dump City” tease. Next up came the UM debut of Led Zeppelin’s “Dazed And Confused.” Kanika Moore — who is in Doom Flamingo with Stasik and has covered Zeppelin’s “Kashmir” with UM previously — delivered a powerful vocal performance on the Zep classic, complete with the Robert Plant/Jimmy Page guitar and vocal exchange with Cinninger. Umphrey’s then went it alone on the classic “Wappy Sprayberry,” which segued into “1348.” A trio of vintage tunes would close out the set beginning with a “Glory” > “Hajimemashite” > “Glory” excursion and wrapping up with “40s Theme.”
