Umphrey’s McGee will release a new album entitled You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall & Left A Raging Bull via their Nothing Too Fancy Music label on July 16. The 12-track studio album contains 10 songs often used to open live shows, including lead single “Leave Me Las Vegas,” as well as two tunes that appear to be previously unheard from their titles.

“Catshot” is the oldest song featured on You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall & Left A Raging Bull as Umphrey’s McGee debuted the instrumental intro live on February 19, 2009 at Variety Workplace in Atlanta. “Leave Me Las Vegas” was premiered less than a month later, while “Tango Mike” was first played in 2010 and 2011 saw the debuts of “Nipple Trix” and “There’s No Crying In Mexico.”

By the mid-2010s, Umphrey’s was kicking off most concerts with these instrumental intros, among others, and often walked out as pre-recorded portions played over the PA before the band dove into the tune. “Depth Charge” and “Gurgle” arrived in 2012, “You Got The Wrong Guy” and “Le Blitz” initially saw action in 2013 and “October Rain” dates back to 2014. Both “Le Sac” and “Restrung” have yet to be performed live as per All Things Umphreys.

The members of Umphrey’s McGee recorded You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall & Left A Raging Bull separately while self-isolating during the pandemic. In addition to its coming availability on streaming services, physical editions and merch are on sale now.

Read a note regarding You Walked Up Shaking In Your Boots But You Stood Tall & Left A Raging Bull from Umphrey’s McGee:

The volume of chatter grows, the temperature rises, and the buzz in the room grows palpable. A flicker, then darkness as the house lights descend . . . the anticipation, the excitement that you’re about to experience something unknown, together.

The opening notes of the walk-on music leap from the line array, instantly setting the mood.

It’s live. It’s on.

The feeling of those shared experiences has been sorely missed. The physical community displaced, longing for that connection together. Born from the live experience, forged from the pandemic, that desire to be together served as the impetus for this record. The irony isn’t lost on us that it took a year of home isolation to record a studio album inspired by live use. Recorded from afar, one by one, none of us together for a single note of the recording. The universe sure has a great sense of humor.

YOU WALKED UP SHAKING IN YOUR BOOTS BUT STOOD TALL AND LEFT A RAGING BULL is an album designed to put the wheels in motion, to get up and get after it.
