One of many special moments that took place during Umphrey’s McGee‘s two-night stand with moe. at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado over the weekend came amid the final set on Saturday. Umphrey’s McGee brought out moe. guitarist Chuck Garvey for a majestic version of the beloved instrumental “Glory.”
Garvey, who suffered a stroke in November of 2021, sat out all of last year while recovering. Chuck returned to the road in January and UM celebrated his talents with the collaboration on Saturday.

The guitarist was the lone member of moe. that didn't join Umphrey's McGee for “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” on Friday. So, it was all the more impactful when UM guitarist Brendan Bayliss announced “Make some motherfucking noise for Chuck, everybody” while the band was wrapping up a “Plunger” jam. Garvey emerged, took a spot on stage and plugged in as Umphrey’s McGee transisitioned into “Glory.”
While “Glory” is usually a showcase for Jake Cinninger, the Umphrey’s guitarist shared the spotlight with Chuck Garvey at Red Rocks. Cinninger played the main riff and variations as Garvey dropped a string of anthemic licks. The pair engaged in an otherworldly back-and-forth that gained in speed and intensity to bring “Glory” to a stellar climax. Both axemen continued to shred during the breakdown.

Plenty of other collaborations went down on the Rocks this past Saturday, June 17. moe.’s set included Cinninger lending a hand on “Opium” with Bayliss and bandmate keyboardist Joel Cummins contributing to a cover of Men At Work’s “Down Under” and the conclusion of “Rebubula.” Additionally, Umphrey’s brought back Garvey as well as moe. percussionist Jim Loughlin (on vocals) and drummer Vinnie Amico for a take on Metallica’s 1991 smash “Enter Sandman.”
