Umphrey’s McGee joined forces with moe. on Friday to kick off a two-night stand at Red Rocsk Amphitheatre near Denver. After moe. welcomed UM guitarist Jake Cinninger to shred on “Happy Hour Hero,” members of moe. returned the favor by helping Umphrey’s close their first of two sets with a cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.”

Originally released by The Rolling Stones on their 1971 album Sticky Fingers, “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” is one of the few songs that is part of both moe. and Umphrey’s McGee’s repertoires. moe. debuted their cover of the tune penned by Keith Richards and Mick Jagger on February 19, 2003 in Portland, Oregon. Fifth-two additional versions followed through this past April at Higher Ground in Burlington, Vermont. Meanwhile, Umphrey’s first trotted out their take on December 30, 2007 at Chicago’s Aragon Ballroom with last night marking their 34th cover of “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking.”

moe. keyboardist Nate Wilson and percussionist Jim Loughlin took up spots next to their UM counterparts Joel Cummins and percussionist Andy Farag for the final song of the headlining band’s first set. Bassist Rob Derhak stood in for Ryan Stasik and handled lead vocals while guitarist Al Schnier was part of a three-guitar attack with Brendan Bayliss and Jake Cinninger.

Bayliss, Cummins and UM drummer Kris Myers sang harmony behind Derhak on the Stones’ cover. Members of the Umphrey’s crew rolled out the massive cowbell previously seen on the Summer Camp stage during “(Don’t Fear) The Reaper” within Umphrey's and moe.'s collaborative set. moe. drummer Vinnie Amico and Loughin took turns banging on the cowbell as part of the breakdown that gave way to the jam.

Friday’s “Can’t You Hear Me Knocking” jam began with Schnier uncorking angular licks. Jake Cinninger was next up as he strung together one powerful lick after another to lead into the final riff. All three guitarists, the keyboardists and Derhak connected on the anthemic riff to bring the memorable cover to a close.
