Jam vets moe. returned to Saranac Brewery in Utica, New York for the first time since 2018 over the weekend for a two-night stand. The band kicked off the run on Friday with a show that saw guitarist Tim Palmieri take over for moe. guitarist Al Schnier on a second set “Puebla.”

moe. launched the “Al Setlist” with “Crab Eyes.” The track off the band’s 2003 semi-live studio album, Wormwood, was played for the first time since October 29, 2021, for a total span of 61 shows, accorindg to Phanatsy Tour stats. That performance took place just before guitarist Chuck Garvey suffered a stroke. Chuck thankfully recovered and returned to the band full-time earlier this year.

A fitting “Happy Hour Hero” came next. Debuted in 1995 and making is first appearance at Saranac Brewery in 2006, the band has played the song written by bassist Rob Derhak eight times at Saranac Brewery in the past 17 years, as per Phantasy Tour.

moe. then reeled off a five-song seamless sequence that began with Schnier’s “Not Coming Down,” Wormwood’s opening track, which segued into a cover of Blind Faith’s “Can’t Find My Way Home.” Up next, the title track to Wormwood nearly hit the 10-minute mark before Sticks & Stones’ (2008) “Deep This Time” surpassed it at around 11 minutes. “Downward Facing Dog,” however clocked in as the longest in the segment reaching to roughly 13 minutes. “Downward Facing Dog’s What Happened To The La La’s companion, “Haze,” brought the first set to a close.

moe. began the second frame with the classic Allman Brothers Band instrumental “Jessica.” A 16-minute rendition of Al’s “Siver Sun” followed before the band headed into relatively newer material with Rob’s “LL3,” debuted in 2018 and appearing on the band’s latest studio album, 2020’s This Is Not, We Are. From “LL3,” moe. made their way into “Puebla.” While Al would begin the song, Lotus guitarist Tim Palmieri — who guested with the band recently in New York City — subbed in for Schnier about halfway through the jam. Tim and the band wound up finishing the Wormwood tune without Al.

Schnier would return for the ensuing “Tubing The River Styx” before the band explored Derhak’s “Billy Goat” for 16 minutes. Al’s “Tailspin” concluded the second set. moe. returned to encore with the recently dusted off “Farmer Ben.” The song containing rapping by percussionist Jim Loughlin also boasts teases of other songs. The Saranac 2023 rendition saw the band offering snippets of “Brent Black,” “Moth” and “The Pit.” Derhak’s “Okayalright” capped off the moe.’s first night back at Saranac in five years.
