Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Rarely Played ‘Big Heart’ Cover In Dillon

Umphrey’s McGee’s Colorado run began on Thursday night in Dillon at the scenic Dillon Amphitheater. The band broke out a cover of The Lounge Lizards’ jazzy instrumental “Big Heart” for its second UM setlist appearance in a decade.

“Big Heart” was most frequently played by Umphrey’s McGee in the early aughts, but it fell into the obscure rarity realm by 2010. UM last performed “Big Heart” in 2019, spanning 214 shows between appearances. Prior to that, “Big Heart” was last seen in an Umphrey’s McGee setlist in 2013.

Leading up to the bust out, much of the first set was constructed from newer material, like opener “Suxity,” and “Cut The Cable,” “Fenced In,” “Ordinary Times” and “Exit Signs.” Longtime setlist staple “The Crooked One” provided a big dose of improvisation in the first set. Fellow staple “Mulche’s Odyssey” followed the “Big Heart” bust out as the first set closer.

The second set relied much more heavily on older UM originals, like wrapping the instrumental “Nothing Too Fancy” around “Women Wine & Song.” The second half opened with the day-early “Bad Friday” and “Conduit,” before the aforementioned “N2F” > “WWS” > “N2F” sequence. The back end of the set was built around “Speak Up” and “The Fussy Dutchman.”

“Pay The Snucka” snuck into the encore slot as UM brought the show at the Dillon Amphitheater to a close.
