Umphrey’s McGee‘s Friday, May 26 set at the final Summer Camp Music Festival at Three Sisters Park Chillicothe, Illinois saw the co-hosting band welcoming vocalist Kanika Moore for a Tina Turner, who sadly died on May 24, tribute. The Doom Flamingo singer led UM through a rendition of Turner’s classic “What’s Love Got To Do With It.”

Umphrey’s McGee kicked off their set on the Moonshine Stage with a four-song seamless sequence beginning with “Conduit” followed by 14.5-minute “Pure Saturation” ahead of “Hiccup,” the latter two songs appear UM’s 2022 album Asking For A Friend (they are adjacent on the record but in opposite order as played at SCamp). The opening sequence came to a close with the vintage “Thin Air.”

UM then embarked on an expansive “Draconian” before welcoming Moore for the Tina Turner tribute. Written by Graham Lyle and Terry Britten, “What’s Love Got To Do With It?” marked Tina Turner’s first and only No. 1 single on the Billboard Hot 100 and also landed the Queen Of Rock ‘n’ Roll three Grammy Awards for Record of the Year, Song of the Year and Best Female Pop Vocal Performance. The song appeared on Turner’s 1984 comeback album, Private Dancer.

For UM and Moore’s version, Kanika prefaced the song by saying “Tina Turner we miss you, we love you. Let’s not mourn her, let’s celebrate her.” Umphreys bassits Ryan Stasik‘s Doom Flamingo bandmate then delivered a characteristically stellar vocal performance with Umphrey’s backing her with an arrangement failry close to the orginal that saw guitarist reeling off a solo ahead of the last chorus.

UM then went it alone for a pairing of “Glory” and “40’s Theme.” The band brought the set to a close with “Puppet String,” which saw them teasing rarity “Web Tangle.” Watch UM and Kanika Moore honor Tina Turner at Summer Camp below:
