Umphrey’s McGee Busts Out Nine Inch Nails Cover In Philadelphia
By Andy Kahn Oct 23, 2016 • 8:09 am PDT
Umphrey’s McGee played the third show of a three-night run at The Fillmore in Philadelphia on Saturday night and again offered a number of rarities. One of the bust outs was a cover of a Nine Inch Nails song not played since 2012.
UM selected longtime staple “40’s Theme” to open the concert at The Fillmore with guitarists Jake Cinninger and Brendan Bayliss taking their customary solos. The first rarity of the night came next as Umphrey’s broke out “Stanton” for just the third performance of the original debuted in 2014 and last played on February 19, 2015 (a 162 show gap). It was followed by what’s become another rarity in the form of the second “Search 4” of 2016. Staples “Higgins” and “The Fussy Dutchman” and the opus “Preamble” > “Mantis” rounded out UM’s first set.
During setbreak the Chicago Cubs clinched the National League pennant for the first time in 71 years – meaning a Los Lobos cover of an UM song is coming. Prior to the start of “Dump City” Bayliss dedicated the second set to infamous Cubs fan Steve Bartman. Cinninger then led the sextet on “Booth Love” ahead of a take on “Bridgeless” which opened up into a jam that settled on a portion of “Draconian” marking the fifth live performance of the original debuted last year. A take on “The Bottom Half” preceded the biggest bust out of the night as “Wish” by Nine Inch Nails was covered for the first time since its debut 395 shows ago on December 29, 2012. “Conduit” and the conclusion of “Bridgeless” ended the set. The encore began with “Speak Up” and wrapped up with Bayliss utilizing a wine bottle as a slide on “Mullet (Over).”
