Toto's summer tour with Christopher Cross and Men at Work touched down at the Kia Forum outside Los Angeles on Sunday, August 24. A memorable moment came at the end of the night, when David Paich joined the headliners and their tourmates for “Africa.”

Keyboardist, vocalist and songwriter David Paich co-founded Toto in 1978. The Los Angeles-bred musician wrote or co-wrote many of the band’s songs, including hits “Africa,” “Rosanna” and “Hold The Line.” Paich and guitarist Steve Lukather are the only members to appear on every Toto studio album.

In 2020, David Paich retired from the road to focus on his health. He’s since made occasional appearances with Toto. Paich’s last performance with the band before Sunday came at their Hollywood Bowl debut last September.

“We got a special treat for you tonight,” Lukather told the hometown crowd before Toto’s 15th and final song of the evening at the Kia Forum. “The guy who started this band with our brother Jeff Porcaro is here tonight to come out here and jam with us. Ladies and gentlemen, let’s bring him out — the man himself Mr. David Paich.”

David Paich took center stage as Toto began performing “Africa.” Christopher Cross and Men At Work’s Colin Hay also emerged to help sing the chorus of the 1982 hit.

Paich sang the first verse, contributed backing vocals and danced around the stage. Current Toto vocalist Joseph Williams handled the other verses.
