Tedeschi Trucks Band made their Madison Square Garden debut one to remember on Friday night with help from special guests Trey Anastasio, Norah Jones and Lukas Nelson. The Phish guitarist’s time on stage at the New York City venue included a fierce rendition of The Who’s “The Seeker.”

Friday’s TTB show was the second of the group’s Garden Parties concerts following their debut at TD Garden in Boston on Wednesday. The band led by Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks delivered a two-and-a-half-hour performance in New York City after an hour-long set from openers Lukas Nelson + POTR.

Trey Anastasio emerged towards the end of the TTB’s main set. Susan Tedeschi introduced Trey as the man who played MSG “more than anybody except for maybe Billy Joel.” The first song he added to was “The Seeker,” a Tedeschi Trucks Band debut. Anastasio and Tedeschi shared lead vocal duties on the song originally released by The Who as a single in 1970. All three guitarists on stage exchanged solos to the delight of the crowd in bringing “The Seeker” to a rousing conclusion.

Friday’s 22-song performance from the Tedeschi Trucks Band began with a sweet rendition of live favorite “Anyhow.” The group then turned to 2022’s I Am The Moon albums for the soul-laden “Playing With My Emotions” and groovy “Ain’t That Something” before delivering the rollicking “Part Of Me.” A bombastic cover of The Rolling Stones’ “Doo Doo Doo Doo Doo (Heartbreaker)” and ethereal “I Am The Moon” paved the way for a 21-minute “Pasaquan” featuring just Trucks, keyboardist Gabe Dixon, bassist Brandon Boone and drummers Tyler “Falcon” Greenwell and Isaac Eady.

Norah Jones was the first guest of the evening as she joined Susan Tedeschi for a duet of John Hiatt’s “Have A Little Faith In Me.” Tedeschi revealed Hiatt was supposed to have been on hand at MSG but was unable to make it after suffering an injury while hiking. The rest of TTB then returned for a rousing rendition of Tom Petty’s “You Wreck Me” featuring Norah Jones on piano and vocals.

Tedeschi Trucks Band continued on sans guests with live staples “Midnight In Harlem,” “Made Up Mind” and “I Want More.” The latter gave way to a version of Jeff Beck’s “Beck’s Bolero” that saw Derek Trucks work in licks from “Freeway Jam.” Susan Tedeschi then starred on a medley of John Prine’s “Angel From Montgomery” and the Grateful Dead classic “Sugaree” before Anastasio came out for “The Seeker.”

After “The Seeker,” Trey Anastasio stuck around for “Bell Bottom Blues” and “Layla,” two songs he previously played with Tedeschi Trucks Band at LOCKN' in 2019 as part of a near-complete performance of Derek & The Dominos’ iconic Layla And Other Assorted Love Songs album. Lukas Nelson also contributed to the set-closing “Layla” on Friday. Screens around the venue displayed a graphic indicating Tedeschi Trucks Band will return to the Beacon Theatre in New York City for shows on February 29, March 1 and March 2, 2024.

Susan Tedeschi, Gabe Dixon and Lukas Nelson emerged to kick off Friday’s encore with a gorgeous version of Leon Russell’s “A Song For You.” The rest of the 12-piece ensemble then returned for “Soul Sweet Song,” a cut off I Am The Moon dedicated to late co-founding member Kofi Burbridge. Susan Tedeschi welcomed all of the evening’s guests back to the stage for a medley of Sly & The Family Stone’s “Sing A Simple Song” and “I Want To Take You Higher” to close out the show.
