Tedeschi Trucks Band’s 10-show Beacon Theatre residency got its first taste of company Wednesday night, as Wilco guitarist Nels Cline and Future Soul co-producer Mike Elizondo each teamed with the 12-piece ensemble during the run’s fifth installment.
Susan Tedeschi and Derek Trucks guided the group through one marathon set after Robert Randolph kicked off the action at the historic New York City theater. TTB put the focus on their 2022 quadruple album I Am The Moon to start the lengthy frame with performances of “Hear My Dear” and “Fall In” trailed by take on the Tedeschi solo track “Little By Little.” The band then went back to what stands as their latest studio record for one more day until Future Soul arrives tomorrow for “Last Night In The Rain.”
Oldie “Until You Remember” was up next ahead of a cover of Bob Dylan’s “Down In The Flood.” A rousing version of the classic “Let Me Get By” kept the set going. Susan Tedeschi then introduced Mike Elizondo, who co-produced Future Soul with Derek Trucks. Elizondo stood in on bass for the album’s “Hero,” which was debuted live at the first show of the residency.
From there, the TTB turned their attention to other artists’ material by performing Bob Dylan’s “Tangled Up In Blue” and Blind Faith’s “Had To Cry Today.” Then, it was back to I Am The Moon for “Soul Sweet Song” before the group worked through the blues standard “The Sky Is Crying” and Tedeschi’s “Looking For Answers.”
Tedeschi Trucks Band went on to offer their second-ever version of The Rolling Stones’ “Loving Cup.” Nels Cline emerged towards the end of the cover and immediately engaged with Derek Trucks in call and response. The legendary guitarists previously shared the stage at several TTB shows and when Trucks sat in with Wilco in 2023.
Cline and Trucks kept the fretboard fireworks coming as they led a transition into Sleepy John Estes’ “Leaving Trunk.” TTB’s Mike Mattison handled lead vocals on the frequently played cover. Derek and Nels had more solos to trade and ceded the stage to Susan for a potent solo of her own. Eventually, the group pulled off the obligatory segue into “Volunteered Slavery” to bring the 20-minute segment and set to a close.
Tedeschi Trucks Band returned sans guests to punctuate the show with a “Space Captain” encore. The group continues the residency on Friday, the same day Future Soul comes out. Livestreams of the Friday and Saturday night shows can be viewed with a nugs subscription.
