Tedeschi Trucks Band and Gov’t Mule played their penultimate show together of a five-date run last night at Chicago’s Huntington Bank Pavilion at Northerly Island. Once again, the two groups swapped sit-ins with members of the TTB joining Mule before Warren Haynes returned the favor at the end of the concert.
Following an opening run of “After The Storm,” “Rocking Horse” and “Revolution Come, Revolution Go,” Gov’t Mule welcomed TTB vocalists Alecia Chakour and Mark Rivers for “Tear Me Down.” Chakour and Rivers stuck around as their bandmate keyboardist Gabe Dixon also added to Mule’s cover of the Grateful Dead classic “Shakedown Street.”
Gov’t Mule — Warren Haynes, keyboardist Danny Louis, bassist Kevin Scott and drummer Terence Higgins — rolled through “Beautifully Broken” before they brought back Gabe Dixon and the TTB horns (Kebbi Williams, Emmanuel Echem and Elizabeth Lea) for a take on Tower Of Power’s “What Is Hip?” The quartet then went it alone on “Time To Confess” ahead of Derek Trucks teaming with the band on Jeff Beck’s “Freeway Jam.” Trucks and Susan Tedeschi went on to add to Mule’s set-closing “Soulshine.”
Tedeschi Trucks Band launched their set with the recently debuted original “Crazy Cryin’.” The 12-piece outfit then worked through “Signs, High Times,” “I Got You,” “Fall In,” “Until You Remember” and “Let Me Get By.” Next, Susan Tedeschi led the group on “Just Won’t Burn,” the title track from her 1998 solo album. “I Want More” then gave way to a “Beck’s Bolero” that saw Derek Trucks use Jeff Beck’s YardBurst 1959 Les Paul.
The set moved forward with a cover of Bobby “Blue” Bland’s “That Did It” and fan favorite “Bound For Glory.” Warren Haynes then returned to the stage to help the Tedeschi Trucks Band end the show with takes on The Allman Brothers Band classic “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” and the Joe Cocker-popularized “Space Captain.”
Tedeschi Trucks Band and Gov’t Mule close out their time on the road together tonight, September 10 at Pine Knob Music Theatre near Detroit. Watch a replay of the Chicago show and livestream of the Pine Knob concert on nugs with an All Access subscription.
