In the days leading up to this week’s announcement of the new live album/DVD release coming from the Tedeschi Trucks Band, the group shared a number of tracks from their favorite live album moments. The 13 genre-blending, generation-bridging recordings from decades past released by an impressive roster of renowned musicians makes up this week’s Saturday Stream Spotify Playlist.

Tedeschi Trucks Band’s Live From The Fox Oakland comes out via Fantasy Records on March 17 on vinyl and on CD/DVD and DVD/BluRay. The release showcases 15 live tracks culled from the TTB show at the historic Fox Theater in Oakland on September 9, 2016. Here’s a trailer for Live From The Fox Oakland:

Before revealing the details of Live From The Fox Oakland, Derek Trucks, Susan Tedeschi and the rest of TTB took to Facebook to share a series of their “favorite live album moments.” They kicked off with the soon-to-retire Aretha Franklin performing “Spirit In The Dark” from her 1971 Live At Fillmore West LP and continued with “I’ve Got My Mojo Working” from Muddy Waters’ 1960Live At Newport Jazz Festival release. Jimi Hendrix’s “Rock Me Baby” from his performance at the 1967 Monterey Pop Festival was shared as was Leonard Cohen’s “One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong” performance from the Isle Of Wight Festival in 1970.

TTB also highlighted jazz great Duke Ellington’s “Diminuendo In Blue” from Ellington At Newport 1956. The group of course spotlighted The Allman Brothers Band’s classic 1971 recording At Fillmore East (though with a slightly varied video) via “Whipping Post.” Sam Cooke’s 1963 rendition of “Bring It On Home” at The Harlem Square Club was presented as was Bill Withers’ famed Live At Carnegie Hall performance of “Hope She’ll Be Happier.” Van Morrison leading The Band on “Caravan” from the acclaimed 1976 Last Waltz concert film was also selected.

Tedeschi Trucks Band took some liberties including video of a live rendition of the studio track “Joy” released by Shakti and guitarist John McLaughlin in 1976. They continued by featuring “The Ghetto” from Donny Hathaway’s 1972 Live LP recorded in Hollywood and “How Blue Can You Get?” from B.B. King’s notorious 1971 Live In Cook County Jail recording. Finally the playlist and series wrapped with Joe Cocker’s cover of “With A Little Help From My Friends” off the beloved 1970 Mad Dogs & Englishmen live album.
