By Andy Kahn May 24, 2015 • 8:54 am PDT

Today marks the 74th birthday of the man born Robert Allen Zimmerman but known across the globe as Bob Dylan. Influential is mighty understatement when describing Dylan’s impact on popular music and culture as his songwriting, style and evolution across a decades-spanning career became the lexicon for generations of followers. David Letterman may have put it best while introducing Dylan’s appearance last week on the second to last Late Show, stating he’s taught his son Harry, “the greatest songwriter of modern times is Bob Dylan,” which, along with being nice to people, are the only two things you need to know in life.

In advance of the release last year of Dylan’s The Basement Tapes Complete: The Bootleg Series Vol. 11. –a 138 track multi-disc release featuring the most exhaustive collection of songs recorded by Dylan in Woodstock, New York in 1967 while backed by The Band -a 24-minute documentary film about the process of producing the reissue titled The Basement Tapes -The Legendary Tales was released. Vintage footage from Dylan’s tours in 1965 and 1966 (including the notorious “Judas” incident at Manchester Free Trade Hall) is interspersed with interviews with journalists discussing the situation that ultimately led to The Band joining Dylan in New York in 1967 to record what became The Basement Tapes.
