Earlier this year, a trailer for season three of the HBO comedy series The Righteous Gemstones revealed singer-songwriter/actor Sturgill Simpson had joined the cast. Simpson was prominently featured in the third season’s seventh episode, “Burn for Burn, Wound for Wound, Stripe for Stripe,” portraying a militia member called Brother Marshall.
The episode showcased Simpson singing “All The Gold In California.” The song was initially recorded in 1979 by Larry Gatlin & The Gatlin Brothers Band and was a chart-topping hit that year. Simpson’s “All The Gold In California” recording was officially released and credited to Brother Marshall and The Choir Of Fire.

The Righteous Gemstones creator Danny McBride talked about his relationship with Simpson in a 2019 interview with Pitchfork. Regarding Simpson, McBride told P4K:
I love Sturgill Simpson. I’ve gotten to know him over the last few years, too, and he’s a buddy of mine. I just respect his journey. I respect that he’s been doing what he’s doing and found success not when he was 19 years old. He kind of lived a whole life before he became a rock star. And he actively wants to shed people’s perceptions of him. He leads the charge in his career, and not in a way that people expect. I think that’s admirable. I feel like it’s the kind of thing we try to do with what we make as well, always trying to stay ahead of the audience and not trying to get boxed into a corner.
Simpson’s previous acting experience includes roles in the 2020 horror film, The Hunt and the 2019 feature-length drama Queen & Slim. Simpson portrays Henry Grammer in the soon-to-be-released Martin Scorsese-directed Western Killers Of The Flower Moon.
