The 13th Strings & Sol destination event began on Thursday at Sapphire Resort & Spa in Puerto Morelos, Mexico. Greensky Bluegrass, Yonder Mountain String Band and Mountain Grass Unit each brought out special guests for covers and more on the first day of the bluegrass-focused music vacation.

Yonder Mountain String Band got Strings & Sol 2025 underway with their first of three performances. The two-hour set on the Beach Stage was a guest-filled affair featuring sit-ins from The Infamous Stringdusters guitarist Andy Falco, Greensky Bluegrass’ Paul Hoffman and Anders Beck as well as longtime collaborator Tyree Woods.

Tyree Woods led the jamgrass stalwarts through a pair of covers in tribute to artists we’ve recently lost. Yonder backed Woods on Jimmy Cliff’s ‘The Harder They Come” and Todd Snider’s “Just Like Old Times.” Snider had a deep connection with late YMSB co-founder Jeff Austin. The pair co-wrote “East Nashville Easter” together and Snider penned “Sail On, My Friend” in honor of Austin after his passing.

Greensky Bluegrass closed out the Beach Stage on Thursday with a two-hour set. The Michigan-birthed quintet wasted little time before bringing out their friends as Lindsay Lou duetted with Paul Hoffman on “In Control” following the “A Letter To Seymour” opener. Another highlight came a few songs later when GSBG debuted a cover of Cake’s “Never There.”

Also of note were collaborative versions of “Send Me Your Address From Heaven” and “Give A Shit” performed with Mountain Grass Unit mandolinist Drury Anderson and multi-instrumentalist Luke Black. Greensky tacked on a cover of Leon Russell’s “One More Love Song” and fan favorites “Courage From The Road” and “Past My Prime” to end their first of three Strings & Sol 2025 sets.

Mountain Grass Unit made their Strings & Sol debut on Thursday with a late-night set at the Palapa Stage. The on-the-rise quintet was joined by Torrin Daniels of Kitchen Dwellers for a jamgrass take on Widespread Panic’s “Chilly Water.” Next up for the Birmingham, Alabama-based outfit is a Poolside Gazebo set on the last day of the event, December 14.
