Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers Unearth 7 Unreleased Tracks For ‘Origins 1971-1978’ Box Set

A Tom Petty and The Heartbreakers box set, Origins 1971-1978, arrives on November 6 through UMe to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the band. The collection is previewed with one of seven previously unreleased tracks, “Parade Of Loons.”

The unreleased cuts appear on one of five albums included in Origins 1971-1978. Dubbed No Sleep Till L.A. — which will also arrive as a standalone LP, CD and limited-edition Zoetrope — traces the early stages of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers and proto-band Mudcrutch. Press materials further detailed No Sleep Till L.A.

More than a rarities compilation, it is a 12-track document of Tom Petty becoming Tom Petty—tracing the years between Mudcrutch’s earliest recordings and the formation of the Heartbreakers as he searched for the right players, the right sound and ultimately the right band.

Spanning recordings from Miami to Tulsa to Los Angeles, the album follows the band’s journey from their first-ever studio session at Criteria Studios in 1971, through the formative Tulsa sessions where Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch and Ron Blair learned to make records, and into Los Angeles, where it all finally clicked into place. It captures a singer, songwriter and bandleader in rapid development, growing more assured with each session.

The box set is available in three formats: a 5LP box set, a 4CD box set and an uber deluxe edition, each with Blu-ray and DVD. Origins 1971-1978 also includes remastered versions of Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ first two albums, their self-titled debut and You’re Gonna Get It. Further, there is a Cut Out Bin disc which features a collaboration with Leon Russell.

Additionally, the set boasts live performances including the 1977 live radio broadcast from the historic Record Plant in Sausalito, California, including a guest spot from Al Kooper. The set is rounded out by a performance on the UK television show The Old Grey Whistle Test.

“[It was] one of the greatest performances we had ever seen by a band at the top of their game,” the BBC’s Bob Harris wrote of the performance. “They played music from another planet to a room packed with manic fans, in one of the most iconic venues in the world. It was an experience so powerful that five decades later we could still remember every chord, every song, every solo.”

Previewing Origins 1971-1978 is a Peter Sluszka-directed music video — starring Iain Armitage (Young Sheldon) — for No Sleep Til L.A. previously unreleased track “Parade Of Loons.” Check it out below:

The surviving Heartbreakers — Mike Campbell, Benmont Tench, Stan Lynch, Ron Blair, Steve Ferrone and Scott Thurston — are set to make an appearance at the 25th Annual Americana Honors & Awards tonight to receive the Lifetime Achievement Award. The original members of the Heartbreakers — Campbell, Tench, Lynch and Blair, will open the show with a special reunion performance alongside Chris Stapleton.
