Soul Asylum’s Dave Pirner Steers ‘Runaway Train’ With Brandon Flowers In St. Paul

Brandon Flowers brought his Thrasher Tour to the Palace Theatre in St. Paul on Tuesday, welcoming Twin Cities-native Dave Pirner of Soul Asylum onstage for a cover of the band’s 1993 hit “Runaway Train.”

Soul Asylum formed in Minneapolis in 1981. The Pirner-fronted band released “Runaway Train” as a single from their sixth album, 1992’s Grave Dancers Union. The song earned Pirner the 1994 Grammy Award for Best Rock Song.

The St. Paul stop came days after Flowers brought another guest onstage during a hometown show in Salt Lake City. The Killers frontman welcomed his 15-year-old son, Henry Flowers, to play guitar on a cover of Oasis’ “Don’t Look Back In Anger” at Red Butte Garden.

Flowers’ Palace Theatre set once again drew from his new solo album Thrasher, along with songs from prior solo endeavors, Flamingo and The Desired Effect. The evening closed with an encore that included a trio of The Killers songs.
