Watch Spafford Give Tears For Fears Cover A ‘Dirtbath’ In San Diego

Spafford wrapped the West Coast portion of their 2023 Fall Tour with a concert at San Diego’s Music Box on Saturday, November 4. The Arizona-based jam quartet fit their cover of Tears For Fears’ “Mad World,” within instrumental original “Dirtbath.”

The “Dirtbath” > “Mad World>” > “Dirtbath” sequence closed out Spafford’s second set in San Diego. After exploring the varied sounds and textures of “Dirtbath” for nearly 23 minutes, the band dropped into their raved up rendition of “Mad World” — off Tears For Fears’ 1983 debut album, The Hurting.

Led by bassist Jordan Fairless and anchored by four on the floor beat from drummer Nick Tkachyk, “Mad World” saw newest member keyboardist Cory Schechtman utilizing his full rig and adding a tasty piano solo while guitarist Brian Moss showed off his lightning quick chops. The quartet then came back to “Dirtbath” to seal the second set in San Diego with the segment clocking in at over 32 minutes.

Spaff launched the concert with a four song first set of “Parody,” “Giants in the Light,” “Shelter In Place” and “Windmill.” The band began the second set with a delicious “Electric Taco Stand” > “Tequila” > “Electric Taco Stand” sequence. Spafford encored with Green Day’s “Longview.”
