Jerry Garcia Band’s Final Shoreline Show Unearthed For ‘GarciaLive Volume 23’

The Jerry Garcia Estate will issue GarciaLive Volume 23: August 14th, 1993 Shoreline Amphitheatre on October 30. The latest installment in the archival series documents Jerry Garcia Band's fourth and final concert at the Mountain View, California venue.

Garcia was joined at Shoreline by the classic JGB lineup of bassist John Kahn, keyboardist Melvin Seals, drummer David Kemper and backing vocalists Gloria Jones and Jacklyn LaBranch. The complete two-set performance was captured to two-track digital audio tape from the soundboard and mastered for release by Fred Kevorkian.

The August 14, 1993 show was almost entirely devoted to covers, with “Run For The Roses” the lone Garcia original. JGB opened with Marvin Gaye’s “How Sweet It Is (To Be Loved By You)” and went on to perform Bob Dylan’s “Forever Young,” Jimmy Cliff’s “Struggling Man,” Eric Clapton’s “Lay Down Sally” and other staples during the first set.

A version of “Shining Star” extending past the 20-minute mark kicked off the second set. Garcia and company followed with “You Never Can Tell,” “Ain’t No Bread In The Breadbox” and “Wonderful World” before pairing Daniel Lanois’ “The Maker” with an expansive “Don’t Let Go.” “That Lucky Old Sun” closed the set and Peter Rowan’s “Midnight Moonlight” served as the encore.

Jerry Garcia Band made its Shoreline debut on September 1, 1990, filling a date originally scheduled for the Grateful Dead following the death of keyboardist Brent Mydland. That concert was later issued as the Live At Shoreline DVD. JGB returned to the amphitheater in 1991 and 1992 before making its final appearance there in 1993.

GarciaLive Volume 23 follows GarciaLive Volume 22, which presented Garcia’s September 25, 1971 performance at the Lion’s Share in San Anselmo, California with Merl Saunders, Bill Kreutzmann, John Kahn and Tom Fogerty. Volume 22 arrived in May.
