Spafford wrapped a two-night stand at Milwaukee’s The Backroom at Colectivo Coffee on Friday as part of their 2023 Fall Tour. The quartet welcomed longtime friend and saxophonist Jason Singer for an original and Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers’ classic “Breakdown.”
The Tom Petty cover with Singer sealed the second set and began with guitarist Brian Moss and the saxophonist teaming up for the song’s familiar riff before Moss led the way through the verses and chorus. Singer then reeled off a sultry solo which he brought to raucous peak leading back into the chorus and conclusion.

The sold-out show got underway with the tour debut of “Space Gadget” followed by the recently debuted cover of Steve Kimock’s “Ice Cream.” Next, just the second live rendition of new original “Motel 6,” which evolved from an acapella piece into a bluegrass-tinged tune. “Salamander Song” and “Backdoor Funk” followed ahead of set closer “Fake The Fate,” which boasted the first appearance of Singer on saxophone.
The second set launched with “Night After Night.” The quartet then delivered old school favorite “Electric Taco Stand,” in which they fit in their cover of Demi Lovato’s “Anyone,” all told a 24-minute excursion. Following the standout “Breakdown” performance, Spafford returned to encore with “Galisteo Way.”
