Ryan Adams Busts Out Tour Debuts In North Charleston

Ryan Adams brought his tour to North Charleston Performing Arts Center in North Charleston, South Carolina on Tuesday night, performing several of his songs for the first time on the tour with his band The Shining. The night also saw a couple of cover songs as well as a guest appearance by frequent collaborator Jenny Lewis

Backed by The Shining which includes guitarist Mike Viola, keyboardist Daniel Clarke, bassist Charlie Stavish, drummer Freddie Bokkenheuser, Adams kicked the show off in typical tour fashion with a run of songs that began with “Gimme Something Good” off his 2014 self-titled LP. Tour staples like “Let It ride,” “Dirty Rain” and “Dear Chicago” as well as a solo acoustic take on “My Winding Wheel” and a full band “Magnolia Mountain” followed. Next came the first surprise of the evening as Adams dusted off “To Be Young (Is To Be Sad, Is To Be High)” off of his 2000 debut solo studio album Heartbreaker for the first time since 2011 and the first full band rendition since 2009. Two Ryan Adams & The Cardinals songs “The End” and “Peaceful Valley” gave way to the first cover of the night, Adams’ solo acoustic version of “Wonderwall” by Oasis.

A few songs later into the set, opener Lewis emerged to help out on the particularly fitting (given the locale), “Oh, My Sweet Carolina.” After the Lewis sit-in, Adams and The Shining played “When the Stars Go Blue” before Adams, again on solo acoustic guitar, performed a cover of Natalie Prass’ “My Baby Don’t Understand Me” and “New York, New York” before the band returned to bust out “Shakedown on 9th Street” -another Heartbreaker song being played for the first time since 2011 and first non-solo performance since 2009. Running short on time before the curfew kicked in, “I See Monsters” and “Come Pick Me Up” ended the encore-less show.

Adams and his band recently played two nights at the historic Ryman Auditorium in Nashville, Tennessee where they were joined by Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires and where Adams debuted a cover of Bryan Adams’ pop hit “Summer Of ‘69.” The debut came 13 years after Ryan kicked out a fan from the same venue for requesting the song. The Canadian pop star Bryan responded to the cover by telling the San Francisco Chronicle

“Yes, I heard it. Ryan wrote to me to tell me the day before that he was going to do it. I think it was some sort of cathartic release for him to return to that venue and play that song, as you probably know the story there. So I think in some ways, he has been haunted by the song somewhat, which is a shame because it’s a really great song. Anyway, I’m happy he did it. He’s a great artist. And sure I’d sing one of his songs, I’m not sure which one though.”
