The first night of the first weekend of the first Desert Trip music festival began last night at Empire Polo Club in Indio, California with performances by Bob Dylan and The Rolling Stones. The legendary British rockers closed Friday’s festivities at the site of Coachella with a performance that included a bust out of a song on their upcoming new album and their debut cover of a classic The Beatles track.
The typical opening number “Start Me Up” began the 18-song main Stones set. A couple of songs later they broke out “Ride ‘Em On Down,” a Jimmy Reed blues standard last played in 1962 and recorded for their forthcoming back-to-the-blues LP Blue & Lonesome. Later in the show lead singer Mick Jagger led the band threw their first live cover of The Beatles’ “Come Together” (the Fab Four’s Paul McCartney plays the fest later today).
Led by guitarist Keith Richards, The Stones also broke out “Little T&A” purportedly for the first time since 2007. The back half of the set included such hits as “Gimme Shelter,” “Sympathy for the Devil,” “Brown Sugar” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The encore was the commonly paired “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” with an accompanying choir and “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Here’s a pro-shot snippet of “Start Me Up” followed by audience-shot footage of The Stones’ performance captured by Fake Fan:
Desert Trip continues tonight with Neil Young and Paul McCartney performing. Tomorrow The Who and Roger Waters take the stage and all of the acts will return to Indio in a week for Desert Trip’s second weekend.
