The Rolling Stones resumed their Hackney Diamonds Tour on Friday at Mercedes-Benz Stadium in Atlanta. The famed band continued to mine their repertoire for gold as Friday’s concert featured a pair of tour debuts from their iconic 1972 album, Exile On Main St.

Friday was the 10th show of The Rolling Stones’ 2024 tour and they’ve now played a total of 39 different songs. Several have come during the slot picked by fans during pre-show voting and Atlanta was no exception.

The country-tinged “Sweet Virginia” won out in fan voting on Friday. The Rolling Stones’ first performance of the song since a single 2022 appearance came in the five-slot at Mercedes-Benz Stadium. “Sweet Virginia” was tapped to make the Atlanta setlist over “Let It Bleed,” “Rocks Off” and “Wild Horses.”

Frontman Mick Jagger had issues with his harmonica at the start of “Sweet Virginia” but made it through to provide the song’s familiar intro. Jagger played acoustic guitar on the rest of “Sweet Virginia” as musical director Chuck Leavell pleased the home-state crowd with his piano handiwork.

The other tour debut came during guitarist Keith Richards turn leading the Mick-less ensemble. “Due to incredible pressure from the band, I’m forced to sing ‘Happy’ tonight,” Richards informed the audience after fronting “Tell Me Straight” and “Little T&A.” Friday marked the first time this tour Keith Richards was given a three-song segment as lead vocalist.

Exile On Main St. gem “Happy” has been a staple of The Rolling Stones’ live repertoire since its premiere in 1972. Richards led seven performances of “Happy” in 2022 alone, making its absence through Friday a mystery.

Mick Jagger returned following “Happy” to captain the legendary rockers on classics “Sympathy For The Devil,” “Honk Tonk Women,” “Midnight Rambler,” “Gimme Shelter,” “Paint It Black” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.” The lone encore was “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction” as Hackney Diamonds cut “Sweet Sounds Of Heaven,” which typically kicks off the last part of each show, went unplayed for the first time this year.

The Rolling Stones now head to Philadelphia for the next stop of the Hackney Diamonds Tour. Lincoln Financial Field hosts the band tomorrow, June 11.
