Les Claypool’s Fearless Flying Frog Brigade winged into The Wiltern in Los Angeles on Friday for the penultimate show of their summer tour. Les Claypool welcomed his Primus bandmate guitarist Larry “Ler” LaLonde for a King Crimson cover to close out the set.
The Summer Of Green Tour marked the first time Les has taken the Frog Brigade out on the road in 20 years. The new iteration consists of the bassist’s The Claypool Lennon Delirium co-captain Sean Ono Lennon on guitar, the Delirium’s Paulo Baldi on drums, longtime Frog Brigadier Mike Dillon on percussion and Harry Waters on keyboards.
In Los Angeles on Friday two thirds of Primus were present onstage for a cover of King Crimson’s “Thela Hun Ginjeet” off the prog-rock pioneers’ 1981 album, Discipline. The cover exists in the Frog Brigade, Primus and Delirium repertoires. Claypool recently played the song with its co-writer, former King Crimson guitarist Adrian Belew.
In L.A., “Thela Hun Ginjeet” got underway with Lennon laying down the quick rhythm guitar work. Claypool then came in with the song’s slappy bass before stepping to the mic. Ler LaLonde then reeled off a wild solo before kicking things over to Sean for more right hand work high up on the neck. Mike Dillon also excelled on the vibraphone before Les got in on the solo action with a typically outstanding bass run which saw him fitting in “Dueling Banjos” before bringing the King Crimson cut home.

The 2023 Summer Tour has also seen Claypool and company performing material from the Frog Brigade’s sole studio album, 2002’s Purple Onion, as well as a complete performance of Pink Floyd’s 1977 LP Animals, among other tunes from the Claypool repertoire. The L.A. show got underway with Purple Onion’s “Up On The Roof” ahead of Les solo cuts “Rumble Of The Diesel” and “Amanitas.”
Following The Claypool Lennon Delirium’s “Blood and Rockets: Movement I, Saga of Jack Parsons / Movement II, Too the Moon” off the duo’s 2019 album, South Of Reality, Claypool and the Frog Bridge delivered their rendering of Animals. A few more Claypool tunes followed ahead of the King Crimson cover and Frog Brigade encore which saw Les on the “Whamola” ahead of the concert closer “Cosmic Highway.”
Claypool and the Frog Brigade are headed back out on the road this fall for their Hunt For Green October Tour. Check out their itinerary:
