Phil Lesh & Friends continued a series of shows honoring each year of Grateful Dead last night at Terrapin Crossroads in San Rafael, California. Tuesday’s show was in honor of 1974 Grateful Dead with Phil and his band re-creating a setlist the Dead used that year with a twist.

Phil was joined by Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist Rob Barraco, DSO guitarist Rob Eaton, drummer Ezra Lipp, guitarist Stu Allen and vocalist Elliott Peck to pay tribute to 1974 on Tuesday night. In order to avoid repeating any songs performed at the 1973 tribute on Monday, Lesh and his band threw in a few substitutions for the setlist they were re-creating on Tuesday. The show Phil picked to re-create took place on May 14, 1974 at the Harry Adams Field House in Missoula, Montana. The Grateful Dead’s May 14, 1974 performance was featured on Dave’s Picks Volume 9 and was the only show the band played in the state of Montana.

The evening began with a conversation about 1974 hosted by Jay Blakesberg featuring Phil Lesh and Jack Casady of Hot Tuna. Phil’s group then used the May 14, 1974 setlist as a guide with a few substitutions thrown in such as a Peck-sung “You Ain’t Woman Enough” and Eaton leading the band through “Me & Bobby McGee” and “The Race Is On.” Allen handled vocals for the Jerry tunes while Eaton sang the Weir songs. Though the band and audience had celebrated Barraco’s birthday on Monday they reprised the celebration towards the end of last night’s first set. The show came to a close with a “One More Saturday Night” encore.
