Phil Lesh & Friends Pay Tribute To Grateful Dead 1973
By Scott Bernstein Apr 28, 2015 • 8:30 am PDT

Phil was joined by Dark Star Orchestra keyboardist Rob Barraco, DSO guitarist Rob Eaton, drummer Ezra Lipp, guitarist Stu Allen and vocalist Elliott Peck to pay tribute to 1973 on Monday night. The band rolled through the same setlist the Grateful Dead used on February 28, 1973 at the Salt Palace in Salt Lake City, Utah. Original GD keyboardist Ron “Pigpen” McKernan died just about a week after the Dead’s Salt Lake City performance in 1973, which is featured in part on Dicks Picks Volume 28.
The evening started with a discussion about the year 1973 hosted by Jay Blakesberg. Not only did Phil Lesh participate in the discussion, but Hot Tuna bassist Jack Casady spoke about the year as well. From there, Lesh took the stage with his band to re-create the setlist from February 28, 1973. Eaton and Allen handled the majority of lead vocals on Weir and Garcia songs respectively on Monday night. Rob Barraco was celebrating his birthday and was honored by his bandmates and the crowd towards the end of the evening
