Perpetual Groove Open Return To Georgia Theatre With ‘Familiar Stare’ Performance
By Scott Bernstein Aug 22, 2016 • 1:01 pm PDT
On Friday Perpetual Groove returned to their “home venue” the Georgia Theatre in Athens, Georgia. The quartet played the venue just a few days after issuing a new EP and started the show with a live performance of the tunes from the release.
PGroove’s Familiar Stare EP compiles four studio tracks that marks the first collection of tunes from the band’s classic lineup since 2007. On Friday, the foursome opened the first set with the four songs from Familiar Stare played in the same sequence found on the EP. The band spent the rest of the set focusing on “newer” material including “Paper Dolls” and “53 More Things To Do In Zero Gravity” as well as the classic “Two Shores.”
Friday’s second set saw PGroove open with “Mota” and then unveil their first-ever cover of Muse’s “Madness.” The band then weaved three songs together with an inventive “Out Here” > “Playground” > “Space Paranoids” > “Out Here” > “Playground” sequence. The funk-rocker “TTFPJ” brought the second set to a close. Perpetual Groove had a stand out encore to end the night as they followed their signature “Sweet Oblivious Antidote” with a “Speed Queen” > “Echo” > “Speed Queen” suite. Next up for the band is an extensive Fall Tour.
