After looking back last year with the Sweet Oblivious Antidote 20th Anniversary Edition reissue, Southern psychedelic rock band Perpetual Groove now eyes the future. The quartet released new singles “Black Sheep’ and “Sea Of Freaks” along with accompanying videos for each track.

Perpetual Groove — guitarist Brock Butler, keyboardist Matt McDonald, bassist Adam Perry and drummer Darren Stanley — have been reborn with their first lineup change in decades. The uber-talented Stanley joined the band following the departure of longtime and incredibly steady drummer Albert Suttle. The switch gave the band the opportunity to breathe fresh life into classic originals and work on new material.

The evolution of PGroove is displayed on their new singles. Butler, McDonald, Perry and Stanley decided to put out the songs together in a throwback to the days of yore. “We wanted to release ‘Black Sheep’ in the style of old 45 singles where you would get two songs on a ‘single’ release. ‘Sea of Freaks’ was the obvious companion,” McDonald explained.

“The demo for ‘Black Sheep’ that Brock & Adam recorded immediately inspired the entire band to jump in both feet first & and expand upon it. This one was pieced together over a few weeks bouncing between all four members constantly evolving,” the keyboardist added. “I could not be happier with where we all landed with ‘Black Sheep’ in its final iteration.”

While “Black Sheep” builds upon the signature PGroove sound, “Sea Of Freaks” goes in an entirely different direction. “I had just recently acquired the Life Aquatic soundtrack on vinyl, and I had listened to it several times in a row,” Adam Perry stated of the song. “I had those Mark Mothersbaugh synth lines bouncing around my head, which led to some great inspiration. I sat down with my Moog and ‘Sea of Freaks’ just came pouring out almost all at once. One part after the other. The vocal part was inspired by a moment and a person from our past. Makes me chuckle a bit whenever I hear it.”
