Mt. Joy will release a new album, Orange Blood, via Island Records on June 17. The Philadelphia-born, Los Angeles-based rockers also shared the LP’s title track.
When the pandemic sidelined Mt. Joy’s 2020 tour with The Lumineers, guitarists Matt Quinn and Sam Cooper decamped to the Southern California desert where they drew inspiration from the area’s copious sunshine. Quinn recalled the period out of which Orange Blood emerged:
I was definitely drawn to the color orange. When we were in the desert, everything revolved around the sun. I started playing with the idea that the light we see is this sort of orange blood that runs through all of us and gives life to everything it touches.
Our last album was a breakup record. It had a darker feel. When we were in Joshua Tree, there were so many sad things in the world. We wanted to build something that found beauty in the fact the world has always been crazy. We were trying to find a way to be present enough to appreciate our surroundings even if they’re in decay.

Quinn and Cooper returned to Philly with the full band — keyboardist Jackie Miclau, drummer Sotiris Eliopoulos and bassist Michael Byrnes — to finish up the 10-track album with producer and collaborator Caleb Nelson. Mt. Joy previously shared Orange Blood’s sixth track, “Lemon Tree,” and now follow with the album opener and title track.
“Orange Blood” arrived along with a music video directed by Hannah Edelman. Watch it below:
Mt. Joy is hitting the road in 2022. The band will kick off an extensive summer tour on June 16 in Isle Of Palms, South Carolina before wrapping up on September 10 in their hometown of Philly. A fall run gets underway on October 15 in New Orleans before concluding in early November with a three-night stand in Austin, Texas.
