Mogwai will release their 11th studio album, The Bad Fire, on January 24 via Temporary Residence Ltd./Rock Action. The Scottish post-punk band shared another preview of the record with the release of the single, “Lion Rumpus.”

Acclaimed producer John Congleton worked with Mogwai on The Bad Fire, which includes the previously shared lead track, “God Gets You Back.” The new music is the first from Mogwai since the release of their 2021 album, As The Love Continues.

Congleton joined Mogwai during recording sessions held in Lanarkshire, Scotland. The band members dealt with “tough personal moments” in the wake of the release of As The Love Continues. Pulling from those experiences, the new album’s title is a Scottish phrase meaning hell. Press materials announcing the new record called it “a collection of songs that forgo nostalgia and easy victories, once again finding Mogwai pushing forward with some of the most beautiful and explosive songs of their career … a bold return from Mogwai, a record that retains Mogwai’s power whilst delving into fresh new territory for the band. Stay tuned for more news.”

The band issued the statement below regarding The Bad Fire:

“After the high of putting out As The Love Continues, the following years were personally hard for us. We’ve dealt with a lot of loss and in Barry’s case a serious family illness with one his daughters. Getting back together to write and record this record felt like a refuge and with John Congleton we feel that we’ve made something special. We often hear from people that our music has helped them get through hard times in their lives and for once I think it applies to us as well.”

Mogwai previously announced an extensive 2025 tour dates supporting The Bad Fire. “Lion Rumpus” arrived with a video directed by long-time collaborator Antony Crook and starring Glaswegian native Lawrence (Larry) Wilson. The video is based on Wilson’s move to New York City and becoming a dog walker. Watch here:
