Mick Jagger recently floated the idea that The Rolling Stones could possibly donate money gained from selling their back catalog to “maybe do some good in the world.” The Stones frontman made the comments in an interview with The Wall Street Journal Magazine.
It’s important to note that no such deal has been officially announced. But a number of rock stars have been cashing in on their catalogs including Bob Dylan, Mick Fleetwood (who sold his Fleetwood Mac publishing rights to BMG) and Neil Young, who recently sold 50 percent of his catalog to Hipgnosis Songs. The sales brought in tens of millions to hundreds of million of dollars with Dylan’s sale of his entire catalog to Universal clocking $300 million.

The WSJ Magazine interview centered around Jagger helming The Rolling Stones business side since a bad deal with former manager Allen Klein led to the band losing the rights to their pre-1971 catalog. When asked if The Rolling Stones planned to sell their post-1971 catalog, the WSJ noted that Jagger said no, “the children don’t need $500 million to live well. Come on,” he went on to say before adding, “You maybe do some good in the world.”
The Rolling Stones are still adding to their catalog with the first album of original music in 18 years, Hackney Diamonds, arriving on October 20. So far, the band has released two singles, “Angry” and “Sweet Sounds Of Heaven,” the latter of which arrived today and features Stevie Wonder and Lady Gaga.
