Members Of Blackberry Smoke Jam On ‘Cortez’ With Gov’t Mule In Asbury Park
By Scott Bernstein Aug 13, 2016 • 8:10 am PDT
On Friday night Gov’t Mule continued a run of summer shows with Blackberry Smoke at The Stone Pony Summer Stage in Asbury Park, New Jersey. For the second night in a row, the evening came to a close with members of Blackberry Smoke joining Gov’t Mule for a classic rock cover.
Gov’t Mule put the focus on originals over the course of two career-spanning sets. The first set was highlighted by the “World Boss” > “Mother Earth” that opened the set, a “Rocking Horse” > “Stoop So Low” sequence towards the end of the set as well as a “Slackjaw Jezebel” set closer that included a “Hush” tease. Last night’s second set featured more of the same as Mule kicked off the closing stanza with “Forsaken Savior” into their cover of Billy Cobham’s “Stratus.” Later in the set, Warren Haynes & Co. unleashed a “Game Face,” complete with “Birdland” and “Mountain Jam” teases. When Gov’t Mule returned for the encore, both Charlie Starr and Brandon Still of Blackberry Smoke came out with them for a near 20-minute cover of Neil Young’s “Cortez The Killer.”
