Guitarists Warren Haynes has spent the bulk of 2016 focusing on his Ashes & Dust Band and more recently leading Jerry Garcia Symphonic Celebrations. On Thursday night he reunited with Gov’t Mule to kick off the band’s Summer Tour which includes many shows with Southern Rockers Blackberry Smoke. It didn’t take long for the two bands to collaborate as Blackberry Smoke’s Charlie Starr helped out Mule on the evening’s encore at Maine State Pier in Portland.

Following a set from Blackberry Smoke, Warren led Gov’t Mule through one extended set. Mule fit even more covers than usual into their set, many of which came within originals. A few sequences of note were “Beautifully Broken” > “Breakdown” (Tom Petty) > “Beautifully Broken” and “Blind Man In The Dark” > “Riders On The Storm” (The Doors) > “Blind Man In The Dark.” Other covers played included Radiohead’s “Creep” and Ray Charles’ “I Believe In My Soul.” However, the biggest surprise came towards the end of the set when Gov’t Mule unveiled their cover of The Beatles’ “And Your Bird Can Sing.” Warren & Co.’s debut of “And Your Bird Can Sing” saw them add an interesting vocal refrain to the end of the tune and a lengthy guitar solo from Haynes. When Gov’t Mule returned to the stage for the encore they had Charlie Starr in tow. Mule and Charlie treated fans to a cover of The Marshall Tucker Band’s “Can’t You See” complete with “Hey Jude” teases to end the night in strong fashion.
