Marcus King Band & Penelope Road Cover Grateful Dead In Philadelphia

The Marcus King Band brought their summer tour to The Met in Philadelphia on Thursday. The group welcomed opener Penelope Road for a rendition of the Grateful Dead-popularized “New Minglewood Blues.”
Guitarist Marcus King and his band launched the concert with a take on Grand Funk Railroad's “Sin’s a Good Man’s Brother.” Original favorites performed included “Good Run,” “Wildflowers & Wine,” “Honky Tonk Hell” and “Heartlands,” the latter off the MKB’s first studio album in seven years, Darling Blue.
The 17th song slot saw the emergence of Penelope Road, who are supporting King and company this summer. The ensemble tackled “New Minglewood Blues” in the style of the Grateful Dead’s adaptation of the Noah Lewis-penned, Cannon’s Jug Stompers blues standard “Minglewood Blues.” The bands also added their own spin, delivering a funkier version of “Minglewood.”
Following the collab, Marcus King led the way through “Goodbye Carolina” and “Heartlands” ahead of the aforementioned “Wildflowers & Wine” and “Honky Tonk Hell” to close the main set. The band returned to encore with a cover of the Dickey Betts-penned Allman Brothers classic “Ramblin’ Man.”
