The FIFA World Cup Final halftime show made history Sunday as the first musical performance ever staged during the tournament’s title match between Spain and Argentina at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. Spain went on to defeat Argentina 1 – 0.
The halftime show was curated by Coldplay's Chris Martin and brought together more than 350 performers, co-headlined by Madonna, Shakira, BTS and Justin Bieber, with Burna Boy and conductor Gustavo Dudamel, also featured.
The show was produced by FIFA and Global Citizen in support of the FIFA Global Citizen Education Fund. Madonna opened the show in a pre-recorded segment, riding a dune buggy driven by Brazilian soccer greats Ronaldo and Ronaldinho from the tunnel onto the pitch. Madonna then performed a reworked version of “Music” blended with elements of “Disco Inferno” and “Danceteria.”
Gustavo Dudamel next led musicians from the New York Philharmonic Orchestra and The Simon Bolivar Symphony Orchestra of Venezuela through a rendition of The White Stripes’ “Seven Nation Army” featuring The Muppets. BTS was then given the spotlight for a rendition of their song, “Dynamite.”
Ted Lasso actors Jason Sudeikis and Brendan Hunt appeared in character as Ted Lasso and Coach Beard for a lighthearted pep-talk segment, sending Justin Bieber onto the pitch for a stripped-down acoustic performance of “Everything Hallelujah,” from his 2025 album Swag II, reworked with World Cup-themed lyrics.
Shakira and Burna Boy followed with the official World Cup anthem “Dai Dai,” joined by Uganda’s The Ghetto Kids. Chris Martin then led the live debut of an original song, “We Dance,” surrounded children from the PS22 Chorus and joined by The Muppets and Australian singer Emmanuel Kelly.
